She has been working as an Honorary Senior Consultant Paediatrician, Mumbai Port Trust Hospital, Mumbai since Sept. 2010 and is a member of National Certification Committee for Polio Eradication and  the National Verification Committee for Measles Elimination and Rubella Control since 2015.

Superannuating as a Professor and Head, Department of Pediatrics, from L.T.M. Medical College & L.T.M. General Hospital, Mumbai in 2008, she began her teaching career as a lecturer in paediatrics at T.N. Medical College and subsequently worked as Associate Professor, Professor, Head of Department, and Dean In-charge at L.T.M. Medical College and General Hospital, Mumbai.

After undergoing training in Munich Developmental Testing and “Vojta’s Kinesiology to evaluate infants at risk for developmental disorders, in 1992 she was awarded the international scholarship at Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, USA, trained in Paediatric Neurology at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada, was awarded the Fogarty scholarship in paediatric HIV at the New York School of Medicine (2003) and completed the Post Graduate Diploma in Juvenile Justice and Juvenile Jurisprudence, a new course started at the Uni. of Mumbai in 2006. She has been one of the first few medical teachers to start WHO-UNICEF IMNCI training for undergraduate medical students at its inception in India.

At L.T.M.G. Hospital, Dr. Kulkarni started the Early Intervention Clinic for developmentally subnormal children in 1985, and subsequently, the Paediatric Neurology Clinic and the Leaming Disability Clinic which was the first clinic in Maharashtra authorised to certify children with learning disability for availing provisions. The Department of Education and the Education Board of Maharashtra recognised the L.D. Clinic at L.T.M.G. Hospital for assessment and certification of children with Learning Disabilities. This program got momentum in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa where the children with Specific Learning Disability started getting provisions from Std I to XII and at the University courses. Thanks to all this hard work, this disability has now been recognised at the National level and has received attention in the ‘Persons with Disability Act’.

She was awarded ‘Top Ten Women of The City’ award by the Junior Chamber International-India Zone XI Mumbai in 2009, ‘Samaj Shakti Award’ in the field of Medicine by the Hariharaputra Bhajan Samaj, Mumbai (2011), ‘Mahila Gaurav Purskar’ by the Brahman Sabha Girgaon, Mumbai (2015) and ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ by the Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Mumbai (2019).
